Dental veneers are becoming a popular remedy for chipped and stained teeth. We’ll explain what veneers are, how teeth are prepped for having dental veneers applied and whether they’re the right treatment for you.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are custom-made artificial shells that fit over the front surfaces of your teeth. There are several different types, including , porcelain, composite, and zirconia . However, porcelain veneers are the most popular and the most durable. Your dentist will determine the right type for you. The veneers only cover the front surface of your teeth to provide cosmetic improvement and cover chips, gaps, cracks and stains.

Dental veneers are becoming the popular choice among those who are in the spotlight, or whose self-esteem is affected by their misshapen and chipped but otherwise healthy teeth.

Dental Veneer Treatments

Dental veneers are not for everyone, as they are purely a cosmetic treatment. Before making plans you must see your dentist for a consultation and examination. Veneers can be an easy and inexpensive remedy for:

  • Chipped, cracked or broken teeth
  • Stubborn stains
  • Teeth that are too small
  • Diastema (gaps in your teeth)
  • Misshapen teeth

However, they’re not an alternative to crowns or other restorative dental treatments. Crowns and other treatments provide structural and cosmetic restoration to teeth that are damaged by decay or trauma. This is why having an initial consultation is important before planning treatment.

Prepping Your Teeth for Dental Veneers

It’s important that the dentist maintains the same natural size of your teeth when they apply the veneers. As the veneers cover and increase the size of each tooth when applied, the teeth must be prepared for the veneers and reduced in size before the application. A digital scan of your teeth is taken beforehand to serve as the benchmark. The teeth are then trimmed or ground down to accommodate the thickness of the veneer and to provide a better grip for the cement that holds it in place.

Impressions of your teeth are then taken. The technician making the custom veneers uses these impressions to ensure a perfect fit for your veneers. If your dentist is using composite veneers, no impressions are needed. Composite veneers are often chosen to preserve existing dental work or more closely match the color of your natural teeth. Your dentist may also be able to provide you with temporary veneers while your permanent veneers are being made.

When the veneers are ready, your dentist will schedule another appointment. The color and shape of the veneers will be checked against your neighboring teeth, and the fit will be tested. Your dentist will then cement the veneers to your teeth, check that your bite is unaffected and make any final adjustments.

You’ll be under local anesthesia during your final appointment, but when the anesthethetic has worn off, you can resume your daily habits and eat and drink normally. There is no downtime involved with dental veneers and no residual soreness.
